My Students
My teaching and classroom look very different as we moved from traditional in-seat learning to a virtual classroom since the second week in March. Our students were sent home with work to last two-weeks along with devices. As 5th grade students, they had been taught how to create and submit work through the use of Google platform and some online learning such as Khan, Brainpop, and No Red Ink. Luckily, we were better prepared than some, but nonetheless, we walked out of the classroom with plans to return shortly and left almost all of our working materials behind. As we know, this pandemic is everchanging and we have come to accept that our physical time together has concluded, but that our learning and staying connected as a class continues in a different way.
My Project
I am requesting resources to keep my students engaged in remote learning activities that will allow a break from screen time so they can create, imagine, and innovate. The science materials such as owl pellets, magnifying glasses, and text will be used to give students a hands-on experience they would have had in the classroom when learning about food chains and webs. My hope is to continue with our Book Chats virtually and use the requested literature to provide students with reading material they may not otherwise have at home. Animalia is a fun book of discovery and language building and I hope students will remain engaged in hours of clue finding. Rulers will be given to use for our measurement unit while LEGO kits will provide students with materials to create and use to connect math and science concepts. All of these materials will be quite useful in keeping students learning during this pandemic.
