Without a doubt, one of our favorite activities in our 2nd-grade classroom is the daily independent reading time!
My second graders come from all types of backgrounds and over 70% of them receive free and reduced lunch, but I make absolutely no excuses for these young learners!
It is important to me as their teacher to instill the love of reading in ALL of them. Every day is a brand new day to learn and grow in my second-grade classroom! I am in need of quality, nonfiction books in my second-grade classroom, for my lowest of low struggling readers. Every year I experience a wider span of reading levels, and it is just harder and harder each year to find books that are at their independent reading levels.
Books are a glimpse into the wonderful world of knowledge that my students have not yet read or learned about! Nonfiction books at their specific reading levels would be a great asset to their learning!
My Project
Struggling readers are at such a disadvantage already when they enter my second-grade classroom! Just like other students, they are curious about the world around them. They are constantly wanting to read like their peers and be better readers and learners. These nonfiction books would benefit my lower, struggling readers. Typically by second grade, most classrooms have fewer books at the lower reading level. Plus, most often the books are not as engaging and informative as they are at the higher reading level.
This project would strive to meet both of these needs, lower-level reading books, and high-quality literature!
Through this project, all of my students would feel engaged in their daily independent reading no matter their reading levels.
