My Project

My students are all learning English as a second, third, or fourth language. Our population hails from numerous countries, speaks more than a dozen first languages and experiences every walk of life. In spite of their differences, these learners share a desire to gain literacy, grow academically and graduate from high school.

The books selected for this project are focused on high-interest topics written at easily accessible levels.

Students love reading books they can connect to. They are voracious readers of books which ties to their own background experiences.

These books cover themes such as betrayal by a friend, cheating, teen pregnancy, and loneliness. After they read the books, students will design countless book projects. As we continue to develop a culture of reading in our English classroom, students will feel motivated to read these books and the confidence they need to get started. Because they can relate to the topics and the books are leveled, students are able to access more challenging texts, independently.
