Reaching Reluctant Readers Through Social Emotional Learning

Help me give my students social emotional books to help reluctant readers become confident, empathetic learners.

My Project

My third and fourth grade reading intervention students will work hard this school year to become stronger, more confident readers. Many have experienced frustration with reading. These read aloud books will address the emotions they may have dealt with while trying to learn in school.

Books are a way to encourage children to learn while managing the strong emotions they feel at school each day.

This project will encourage discussions during small-group intervention that will address reluctance, kindness, perseverance, inclusion, empathy and understanding different perspectives. It will allow students to listen to stories they may have experienced while exploring situations that are meaningful to their lives.

Through thoughtful conversations and personal connections to the stories, students will learn to recognize the emotions they may feel in class. The books will help create a safe, supportive environment to manage the challenges they face each day. Most importantly, my students will discover that reading can help them feel understood, connect with others and grow into confident readers and compassionate learners.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
