Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the lucky teacher of twenty-three students in a hard-working, low-income area of Connecticut. My students look forward to coming to school every day, and they thrive on our routine. English is not the first language for many of my students. My classroom is full of diverse learners including students with high academic needs. My students love hands-on activities and learning new things. Every day I come up with new ways to keep my students engaged. Third grade is filled with curious kids who have fun personalities. My students always keep me on my toes. Our diverse school is the largest elementary school in our city, with over 600 students. Our entire school family works hard for our students here. We have a positive reinforcement system in our classroom. Students earn "Mitchell Money" in different denominations and spent their money on prizes.
We are currently remote learning to keep a safe distance during this scary time.
I am emailing and dojoing my students but we all agree how different this is. We are continuing to navigate this together with two goals: 1. be safe and 2.learn.
My Project
Like most of the United States our district is currently remote learning. I am no longer in the classroom with my students. There is a learning curve. I miss our daily interactions and I know they do as well. I want to create "thinking of you" bags that parents can pick up at the school parking lot or I can drop of their front door. This bags will remind students how much I care about them.
These bags will be filled with academic supplies and treats to keep their spirits up.
The graph paper and pencils will make our next unit of area and perimeter easier at home. Books they are interested in will give them some independent reading. The glue, colored pencils, and scissors will help with school packets.
My students love stickers, they use them to decorate folders and journals. Chips, fruit snacks, tic tacs, and juice boxes will be fun snacks during work.
