I always felt fortunate to have a mother who really encouraged reading at home. She loved to read and she instilled that love in each of her five children. However, at the school where I teach, the parents are not always able to be advocates for reading. Many of them work two or three jobs just to be able to keep a roof over their children's heads. Many of them are unable to read themselves. Some of them do not have a single book in their home. I would like to be able to prepare "Book Bags" for my children. Here's how it would work: I would provide each child with a Book Bag containing a book and a specially-designed project, such as a book report or, for the students who are less skilled in reading comprehension, just some questions to answer. The assignment would require the student to read the book to an adult and then discuss it. In this way, the parents can become involved in their child's learning process and give that extra support at home. I am a new teacher and do not have a lot of resources. My classroom library has very few books, most of which are not age-appropriate or not on my students' reading level. I would love to have some children's books for my Book Bag project. While the school's library is a resource that my students can use, many of them just check out a book, pretend to read it and then return it. With the books remaining in my classroom, they can be taken any time and returned when the student is finished with them, instead of having a due date or a late fine. I started AR with my children last year when I joined the school, and I moved up with the same group of children. They enjoy reading and I would like to continue to instill that important skill in them.
