We are a public school serving the entire city. There are five elementary schools that feed into our middle school. I teach a very specific group of students whose needs and abilities span a very wide range from social/emotional needs and focusing issues to intellectual disabilities and autism--all in the same class period over the span of six periods a day.
These students need help to access the curriculum by having an adult constantly prompting and guiding them throughout the lessons as they have difficulty to even begin their work, understand the instructions, and stay focused.
Not only are the lessons modified and accommodations for each student put in place, but the physical environment needs to be optimal in order to best provide for these students.
My Project
As we all know, there are never enough adults for students. Para support in a special education classroom is in demand and sometimes classes of fifteen students with varying needs, from students who can't read and write to students who need constant prompting to focus and stay on task, with only two adults can get challenging. In order for the optimal learning environment, furniture often plays a key factor, especially in a special education classroom.
This table will help an adult to access an entire group of four to five students easily and efficiently since the adult is in a central location to the entire group.
