Rapping Through World History

Help me give my students a learning experience that my students will remember for years to come writing their own raps and creating music with a real DJ.

My Students

My students are part of a small school district in Northeastern Ohio. My fun-loving students are a diverse group of seventh graders who are creative and energetic.

Students enjoy incorporating art, music, and technology into our class learning.

Our learning community seeks new and exciting challenges, bringing topics we study in social studies to life through integrated use of these tools. Students look forward to these activities and hope to learn, gain knowledge, and improve their learning through these new experiences.

My Project

Social studies students will be visited by Chuck Johnson, a disc jockey and musical producer from Columbus, Ohio. Chuck will lead a lesson on the history of hip hop. Next, students will be introduced to the equipment and items used in creating hip hop music such as turn tables, microphones, and a beat maker. Learners will be shown how to scratch records and make their own beats.

Afterwards, students will get the chance to experiment with using the equipment; scratching the records on the turn tables and making a beat.

Finally, students will have an authentic opportunity to perform their own rap lyrics that they created and wrote from various units of study during the year in class, along with beats being provided by Chuck.
