Rapid React: FIRST® Robotics 2022 (Part 3)

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school district has over 15,000 students, with a culturally diverse population including Latinx, Middle Eastern, Asian, Filipino, Polish, and many others. Fifty-one different languages are spoken, and we embrace our immigrant families. We pride ourselves on offering many opportunities for our students to grow academically, athletically, emotionally, and socially. Our high school has 3,300 students, and we offer 18 varsity sports and four varsity academic competition teams, including my robotics team.

During the 2021-2022 school year, our students (and I) will all be in-person, behind clear shields, socially distanced, and wearing masks to keep our community safe; greeting each other with "Buenos días," "صباح الخير (Sabah alkhayr)," "Dzień Dobry," "Доброго ранку (Dobroho ranks)," "शुभ प्रभात (shubh Prabhat)," "Good morning," or other culturally relevant greetings; these 180 engineering students (grades 9-12) will imagine, design, fabricate, and program exciting machines.

My Project

We need to cover the individual participation fees for each of our team members in our FIRST® robotics program this season. These fees cover the cost of the robotics supplies that the students use to design, fabricate, and build the robot. It also covers the cost of the consumables and for us to be able to videotape the team for entry into the virtual portion of competitions and their uniforms - which includes a t-shirt, hoodie, safety gloves, and safety goggles. Part of the fees covers the dinners which we provide for them at our robotics warehouse in the evenings and on weekends.

With 25 rookie team members and only 5 returning team members (all of whom have never actually gone a full season), this is quite a challenge this season.

We hope to eliminate the costs for all of these students and just have them spend their time at school and after school working on the robot, rather than fundraising for supplies. With the increase in COVID in our state, it is incredibly important to stay safe and be protected.

FIRST® Robotics Competition is the Ultimate Varsity Sport for the mind. This season we are competing in a new transportation-inspired game and my seniors will apply for scholarships. Rapid React is sponsored by Boeing and so many other amazing companies that actively recruit from FIRST® alumni.
