Random Acts Of Kindness Week

My students need to learn that not being mean is an important step but it is a passive act, being kind to another person actually requires effort and can be life changing.

My Students

"May I help you with that?", "Hello, how are you today?", "No, please allow me to do that for you." These seem like such simple and kind gestures and statements but how often are they being said in today's high schools?

We are a small high school in New York City and although we are squeezed into two floors of a five story building we couldn't be more apart.

We do not have a large auditorium, a gym, a large cafeteria, or even a school yard to accommodate our entire student body - this makes cross mingling left to just the hallways. High School is definitely the time when friendships and cliques seem to be the most important thing in the world to adolescents but what if they were challenged to step outside of their comfort zone? Our students can probably recognize each other's faces but do they actually try and connect to another person they do not know? Our city culture keeps us moving at a rapid pace but what if for one week we stopped to do something kind for another person?

My Project

Valentines Day or Valentines Week can be particularly stressful as students are wondering who gave what to whom? We want to channel some of that energy and have a Random Acts of Kindness Week. We will launch this week by having all of the staff members in the building wear a Rainbow t-shirt that says iSchool to Nice School. In advisory we will explain the guidelines: each student will be given a suggestion of around 21 ideas that they can do for another student in the building; after they complete their act they will log it into a school database. This database will be checked weekly and a Kindness Thermometer will be filled in to monitor our progress. Our goal is 600 acts of kindness that week! We will also post flyers of some of the acts mentioned on the database. At the end of the week students will visit the database and review the anonymous acts and reflect on this with their advisories. The day will end with the students gathering outside to blow bubbles. I am requesting stickers with our school's name in order to help promote our Random Acts of Kindness week.

We are hopeful that students will first and foremost connect with others that they do not know.

We also want to create a climate of kindness that permeates throughout the school. We want this kindness to become the norm and eventually have a school culture and community that embraces service to others.
