Help me give my students the opportunity to give back to others in their community through our food pantry. Students will be able to pack individual food bags as well as bags for their peers to take home.

The students I teach are special because they have cognitive deficits which impact their ability to learn at the same rate as their peers. Despite their learning challenges, they work hard and do their best. They love to learn and one of their strengths is helping others.
To help my students learn functional and job skills, we have started a food pantry here at our school.
Students are responsible for maintaining inventory, stocking the shelves, sorting food items, and checking expiration dates. In our food pantry, students have specific job duties and tasks they must complete. During the school year, we have annual food distributions for our families and community members four times a year. In preparation for the distributions, students are responsible for following the checklist to pack the individual brown grocery bags with the correct food items.
Outside of our distribution days, my students are responsible for ensuring their peers also have food. Unfortunately, many of our students at the school do not have food at home and there are limited resources to assist them with food. Additionally, many of the students and their families do not have transportation. Their only transportation is the school bus. Having the large tote bags will allow for students to take food home without students feeling embarrassed.
The goal for this project is to teach my students the skills necessary to gain employment and live independently; all while giving back to their community and peers. The long term goal for our food pantry is to provide our students with the resources needed so we can send them home with food on a weekly basis.
