I have a precious group of twenty-two first graders. Many are refugees who are second language learners, and most are from families who struggle financially. All of my students are hungry for knowledge and so excited when they learn something new!
One of our favorite activities is reading "read alouds", reading centers, reading groups.
They love to read! When they aren't reading, they love to explore with STEM materials. Their excitement for learning is contagious! My class is a happy, energized, excited place to be!
My Project
We spend a lot of class time working on reading strategies using leveled text. Students are not allowed to bring the classroom books home. However, it is essential that they practice using the reading strategies with additional text. They need text to apply the strategies and develop their fluency skills.
These take home readers will allow them to continue their reading growth at home.
They will allow parents to join in the learning with their students as well. Many of our refugee students' parents do not speak English, so they can learn right along with their children. Both students and parents will benefit from these books.
