I work for a Title I school in a small inner-city area. My students are diverse learners from many ethnic backgrounds and all students at my school receive free lunch.
My students come from a lower socioeconomic community that struggles at times to give them all that they need for school success.
We want to be able to support them in all the ways that we can so they can truly shine in all that they do. These are smart, capable kids who just need more of a jump-start than some others might.
Reading should always be fun and not just part of the daily testing struggle to find answers within a passage.
If we take the fun of a comic strip and pair it with relevant vocabulary, we can create readers out of students who would have continued to struggle with picture books.
Graphic novels help readers by providing the context with the illustration in an older student format so that students can read more appropriate leveled materials instead of picture books only. What a great way to support readers who may have given up!
