Whether students are watching a chick hatch or ensuring they have clean water, food, and bedding, they are practicing patience and responsibility. Caring for a flock of chickens is a great way for students to learn about biology, compassionate animal husbandry, food science, and sustainable living practices. Fertilized eggs from the hens on our school farm will be hatched in our incubator. Students will candle the eggs and identify the many stages the chicks undergo during the process. Once they have hatched, they will remain in the classroom and be observed until they are old enough to be moved to our school farm. Chicken litter and egg shells will be composted and later used in the gardens as organic fertilizer.
