Our school really focuses on social-emotional learning. We host circles in class that allow our students a voice in decisions. We hold weekly one-on-ones with our kids to go over mental health, grades, and classroom participation. But the most important aspect of our school is the relationship and trust-building that we do with our students. More and more kids are "coming out of the closet." With all the stressors our teens deal with, adding a yearning for acceptance, our LGBTQ+ youth are struggling with their mental health. At our school, around a third of our students are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. These kids are amazing. They genuinely care and do their best to be super supportive to anyone who is struggling, even though they have their own struggles.
We want to show these kids that we genuinely care about them, and what better way than to support their mental health!
We recently created a meditation station for our students. This allows them a space to calm down, meditate, and practice mindfulness when they are upset. We want to add to the station and incorporate books that offer coping skills for our LGBTQ+ youth, a comforting curtain, and a lavender-scented stuffed animal.
