Rain Water to the Rescue!

Help me give my students these water filtration systems and rain water collection system. Without access to clean drinking water, these systems will provide purified water and an education about sustainable water use in an inner city environment!

My Students

My students are all extraordinary kids! Most of these students reside in a poor, urban area that is grossly underfunded, and, in some areas, lacking even the most basic of needs.

Although many of them come from tough neighborhoods and lifestyles, they are strong, smart, and full of life.

These are the scientists of tomorrow.

Each of these individuals has a mind for science and a contribution to make to the scientific world.

Their ingenuity is exceptional, and their thirst for learning is unquenchable. I learn more from them than they do from me! These kids are the kinds of kids that inspire innovation. They are the example that leaders should be following and the hope that will fuel the future.

My Project

I am requesting water filtration systems and rain water collection system. This year, my Environmental Science and Chemistry students have worked diligently to learn how to create a more sustainable environment within our high school. Using a program called Eco-School, these kids have performed rigorous virtual audits of common unsustainable school practices in an effort to identify ways to improve our ecological footprint.

One of the major contributions our school makes to its impact on the environment is the lack of healthy options for clean water.

To combat this issue, my Eco-School kids will learn how to sustainably collect, filter, and purify rainwater for drinking. They will learn about the water table and available water resources in the State of New Jersey and how to mitigate water waste and contamination.

Unfortunately, our school has unsafe and contaminated tap water - the situation is so bad that the students' primary source of clean water is via purchase of plastic water bottles.

Kids are thirsty! They need to have water to drink! Kids shouldn't have to pay for their water and they certainly shouldn't have to be forced to contribute to the global plastic pollution crisis. Learning the basics of water quality and how to sustainably source water is a skill that will last through these kids' lifetimes and support their social and emotional health.

When my students began researching the water filtration process, they were confused and incredulous by the idea of turning rainwater into potable water they could access at any time. They never knew that the rain that runs off into the sewer could be repurposed to meet their basic needs. As we explored the idea further in class, the students discovered the many other different things they could repurpose in our building. With these items, we will continue this special exploration by filtering/purifying our own water.
