Reda and Ruby are some of our students who are most dedicated to protecting the environment and making our community greener at our school. They come to weekly meetings and have taken active roles in our green activities, including our beach clean up and our fundraiser to raise money for buy an outdoor classroom.
The environmental club students at our middle school our deeply committed to making a difference. In the past three years they have educated students and staff about water conservation, purchased the school motion light sensors to conserve electricity, cleaned up our local park, raised money to start an outdoor classroom to get more students outside, and learned about our natural environment. These young people will continue to make waves in their local community as they grow up, convincing others that together we can make a difference for our planet.
My students will learn so much through this project. One skill they will learn is public speaking because they will have to present to students and teachers, explaining the importance of rain barrels to conservation and explaining their rain barrel art competition. They will also learn more about teamwork as they develop their presentation together, run the art competition, and then work with art students to actually paint the rain barrels.
In Their Own Words
Have you ever seen those ugly, old rain barrels? They are often solid colors with no creativity. They may be boring, but they do leave a positive impact on our environment by saving water for our gardens. We want to design a fun and creative environment for our outdoor classroom by painting our rain barrels in beautiful designs. This is an efficient way to be saving rain water and doing so in style.
What if we were to liven them up a bit by creating amazing pictures made by the students/artists at our school? Our idea was to have a coloring contest! The students at our school will participate by providing their rain barrel design and if their picture is chosen, it will be painted onto the rain barrel and shown in our outdoor classroom.
We will become leaders with this project by talking to our school (teaching students and teachers about the benefits of rain barrels) and running an art competition where students get to design the art that will go on our rain barrels. We will then have to decide on the winners and help get the project completed by working with artists. We will stay on task throughout (we make sure things get done because we are so passionate about the environment).
Water conservation is a big part of our environmental club efforts to make our school greener. This year we taught students about the importance of conserving water for our environment and we even got some rain barrels donated to us to help our school save water for our future garden. Rain barrels are an efficient way of helping the environment. By collecting rain we can save tons of money and give back to our environment. Painting these rain barrels will allow beauty to come from these trash can looking things. We’d be creating beauty while giving some lucky students their chance of showing off their art talent. These rain barrels would be a part of our outdoor classroom and help kids to enjoy spending time outside.
