As an English Language Development (ELD) teacher, I have the joy of working with a vibrant and diverse group of students who are not only learning a new language but also adjusting to a new culture, country, and school system.\r\n\r\nMy classroom is more than just a place to learn English, it's a safe, welcoming community where students build confidence, form connections, and find their voice. This project is designed to support that mission by transforming our learning space with flexible seating options that meet the unique needs of English learners.\r\n\r\nThe flexible seating I've selected, sofas, floor chairs, and refreshed tables, will allow students to choose how and where they learn best. This autonomy builds independence and a sense of ownership over their learning. It also increases engagement during reading, writing, and collaborative discussions, especially when we're diving into novels and exploring complex topics and emotions.\r\n\r\nFor English learners, the benefits go even deeper. A comfortable, student-centered environment lowers anxiety, encourages conversation, and promotes peer-to-peer learning—all of which are critical for developing language skills. The seating arrangements will support both individual focus and group interaction, helping students feel more at ease and more invested in their education.\r\n\r\nBy contributing to this project, you're helping to create a learning environment that supports language development, emotional well-being, and academic growth. Your generosity will empower my students to rise to their potential, not just as English learners, but as confident, capable members of our classroom community.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1746786434969,"projectUrl":"project/reading-relaxing-and-rising-a-flexibl/9274281/","projectTitle":"Reading, Relaxing, and Rising: A Flexible Seating Project for ELLs","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Siegel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9733775_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725637536119","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9733775"},{"teacherId":5071704,"projectId":8403813,"letterContent":"Our journey to Ancient Egypt as teams to complete an archeological dig was amazing.\r\n\r\nTeams 'traveled' down and around the hallway corridor to enter their dig sites. Ahead of the expedition, we reviewed the expectations to document the dig and discoveries.\r\n\r\nTeams were greeted by their guides, helpful 7th graders, and were given their lanterns and maps to go to their pyramid and get started. The students fell into the fantasy of being archaeologists and began their digs. Shortly, there were shouts of treasure being found, which got other teams even more invested in the process.\r\n\r\nThey discovered the many treasures contained in each pyramid; gold coins, amethyst, Re, a pyramid and so much more. The level of engagement in the process was amazing. \r\n\r\nStudents shared in their reflection that they felt a bit like archaeologists as they uncovered the items in the pyramid. They loved working with their partners and thought it was a fun way to learn. \r\n\r\nIt was not a lesson that we were able to complete in one day so the adventure stretched over the weekend and students returned to their sites to dig in, get dirty again and finalize their treasure hunt. Each student picked one of the treasure items to research and learn more about.\r\n\r\nI told them how our project was funded and they all expressed their gratitude for your generosity.\r\n\r\nThank you for picking this project, it was a dream turned into reality by your funding and made for a memorable experience to cap off our learning about Ancient Egypt.","fullyFundedDate":1716417481163,"projectUrl":"project/egypt-can-you-dig-it/8403813/","projectTitle":"Egypt, Can You DIG It?","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rayner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5071704_orig.jpg?crop=523,523,x140,y47&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620069468243","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/rayner"},{"teacherId":3338112,"projectId":9084347,"letterContent":"We cannot begin to tell you the fun we are having in our FLEX FRIDAY's thanks to your contributions to our classroom! From the very start, my students were fully engaged in the building process. Throughout the year, we collected cardboard—cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, and toilet paper rolls—to supplement the supplies you provided. Your generosity truly elevated this project.\r\n\r\nEach team began with a detailed sketch after reading about the marvels of Roman engineering. Their challenge was to design an aqueduct with the most controlled, slowest, yet consistent flow of a water \"marble.\" \r\n\r\nThanks to the abundance of materials, students not only had what they needed to construct their designs but also had the flexibility to make modifications after their initial trials. Many students agreed that duct tape and hot glue were the most essential tools, helping them secure their structures. They also found that the cutting tools you provided were superior to scissors, making their work much easier and more precise.\r\n\r\nThe reflection process was just as rewarding as the build itself. Students shared that they loved the hands-on experience, not only did they collaborate and problem-solve, but they also gained a deeper understanding of teamwork. One student remarked, \"If we thought this build was challenging, the work the Romans did to bring water to their cities must have been a massive undertaking!\"\r\n\r\nThis was the second year I have done this project, and I truly believe it was even more successful this time because we had enough materials to bring our ideas to life. It's amazing how much smoother everything runs when you have duct tape!\r\n\r\nThank you for making this experience so meaningful for my students. Your generosity made a real impact, and we are incredibly grateful!\r\n\r\nYou have our deep appreciation!","fullyFundedDate":1716417481282,"projectUrl":"project/when-in-rome-/8397895/","projectTitle":"When in Rome . . .","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rayner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5071704_orig.jpg?crop=523,523,x140,y47&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1620069468243","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/rayner"},{"teacherId":9733775,"projectId":8745212,"letterContent":"The Plant Propagation Project was an incredible success in helping my English Language Learners (ELLs) develop a growth mindset while enhancing their language skills. Using the materials funded through DonorsChoose, my students engaged in hands-on learning by growing plants from cuttings and seeds. This process allowed them to observe firsthand the importance of patience, perseverance, and nurturing—a powerful metaphor for their own academic and personal growth. As they tended to their plants daily, they began to understand that just like the plants, their abilities could grow and flourish with consistent effort and care.\r\n\r\nOne of the most impactful aspects of the project was the opportunity for students to personalize their plant pots and create positive affirmation tags. They expressed their creativity by decorating the pots in ways that reflected their personalities and cultural backgrounds, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their work. Additionally, they wrote positive quotes and growth-minded phrases on plant tags, such as \"Keep Growing\" and \"Mistakes Help Us Grow.\" This activity not only reinforced positive thinking but also provided meaningful writing practice in English. As students crafted and shared their messages of encouragement, they built confidence in both their language abilities and their capacity to overcome challenges.\r\n\r\nOverall, the Plant Propagation Project not only enhanced their language proficiency but also fostered a growth mindset that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. By connecting language learning to real-world experiences and encouraging self-expression, my students became more engaged and motivated.
