Radio Shows and The Things They Carried

My students need a class set (30 copies) of Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried".

My Students

"Good morning, Vietnam!" What does it feel like to listen to the radio as your only source of entertainment and news? Today, it's difficult to imagine media without visual images. After two weeks of summer study, my students will have written and recorded their own radio plays about the Vietnam War.

I work in a fantastic public high school that services a low-income, mostly Chinese immigrant population.

My students are hard-working, inquisitive, and sharp critical thinkers. However, they face tremendous challenges as adolescent immigrants living in an under-resourced urban community. Occasionally, their daily lives overwhelm them, and for a combination of reasons, they fall into the trap of failing classes. My school provides willing students with a second chance. We partner with a small city museum for media to create an intensive two-week summer program that provides under-credited students with an opportunity to earn a history credit and get back on grade level.

My Project

In order to create their radio plays, our students must have a nuanced understanding of the Vietnam War's background, events, and legacy. Important to their overall understanding is the exploration of the war's impact on individuals. Through an in-depth study of Tim O'Brien's book, daily class lessons, and listening to real, actual radio shows from the Vietnam War era, we hope to bring this period in history to life. O'Brien's novel is a poignant collection of short stories about a platoon of American soldiers. The novel centers around various characters and the things they carried from mission to mission. Each character brings a new perspective. Furthermore, O'Brien considers the idea of storytelling; often the lines are blurred between memoir and fiction. This novel will be a great source of inspiration as the students begin to create their own characters and tell their own stories.

Help us make history come alive!

Great literature can enrich the study of history, especially with an event as complex as the Vietnam War. As they read the novel and as they produce their own radio shows, I hope to bring the Vietnam War era into our classrooms. Thank you!
