This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each of my 22 second grade students comes from a different background and has specific needs to succeed in the classroom. A handful struggle with focusing, a few have special needs, some are challenged by reading, and almost all need basic school supplies to complete their assignments.
This project will enable me to achieve the following goals: 1) Provide students with the basic school supplies to implement DPS's curriculum 2) Provide individual students with the materials they need to succeed in the classroom (wobbly chairs for focusing, book bags to take reading materials home) 3) Instill a love of reading in my students through listening tapes 4) Build community in the classroom through indoor recess games.
Our deepest thanks for your generosity!
My Project
The basic supplies (paper, white boards, pencils) etc. are so that we can actually use the curriculum DPS adopted Wobbly chairs are for students who have a hard time focusing and sitting still. I've found that often having something to fidget with helps students focus, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Wobbly chairs are good solution. The books on tape are so that students can engage in the listening center. Listening to someone read fluently is key to their own reading fluency and will help instill a love of reading. The classroom games are for indoor recess things that will help build community.
Bookbags are so students can have books to take home from our classroom library that are on their reading level.
