Help me give my students a high quality guitar storage solution so that we can free up needed space in the classroom and securely store classroom and personal guitars for music class.
I teach at a lower-income K-8 neighborhood school in Northern California. For many of my students, experiencing music in school is an opportunity that they would never get at home. Many of my students cannot afford musical instruments, let alone instruction.
Because of organizations like DonorsChoose.org, our school's dedication the Arts has grown each year!
Currently, we offer Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Choir Classes (some of which are after school); we also offer music classes for all students in K-5th Grade, including instruction on recorder, ukulele, and, "pre-band" instruments called DooDs and TooTs.
My Project
For several years, we have been using the same cardboard boxes to store our classroom guitars. They take up a lot of space in our already crowded K-8 classroom and, because we have to frequently move them to clean, they are falling apart at the seams. They are old, dirty, and inefficient.
A new guitar storage cart would allow us to store our classroom guitars in a more organized and secure way, and also free up much needed classroom space.
Because I teach K-8 General Music and 6-8th Grade music electives, every free bit of space is needed to make room for students (some classes have up to 35 students). Being able to store all of our guitars on ONE movable cart would be a huge relief and we would even be able to move the guitars into another room when we were not using them.
We have been lucky enough to receive classroom guitars through several grants throughout the years. My students love learning the guitar as well as other instruments that include keyboard and ukulele. However, my classroom is tiny and now that all of my K-8 classes take place in the same room (I used to have two rooms), it is sometimes challenging to have enough space for the students to learn efficiently. Through smart storage solutions, our students will be able to spend more time learning music and less time packing and unpacking instruments during class.
