I have a class of 23 amazing, vivacious, and unique first graders!
These students are on varying levels.
I have many who need a multisensory approach to learning their mathematical skills in order to be successful. I have a mixture of children of all backgrounds and socioeconomic classes. They are hungry to learn and want to be better readers. Many have not been exposed to the literature that they should have been by this stage in their life. Many have single parents who work a lot. As a result, many are being raised or taken care of by their grandparents after school. We are a Title I school with a high free and reduced-price lunch rate and we also have Integration as well as ILC classes in our building.
My Project
120 is the magical number in first grade. This is what our students need to master. They are expected to be able to add and subtract to 120.
Through this project, They will have the opportunity through multisensory activities and role play to race their way to 120.
My students will have opportunities to show what they know are at a race. The tires and the decorations will create a space where my students will want to learn as well as showcase their abilities while being race car enthusiasts. They will be able to show their knowledge of the 120 chart with the magnetic chart. The number line will be a great reference and learning tool for them to use for sequencing as well as problem solving.
Racing their way to 120 will provide them with a safe environment that will allow them to try new activities, strategies as well as problem-solving opportunities without fear of being incorrect or of failure!
