My Students
My students are energetic and enthusiastic learners who live in a culturally diverse community. They are constantly eager to learn all they can about the world around them, how things work, and the people that live in their community.
My students are very interested in how they can make a difference in the world.
When they see a problem, they like to create solutions to try. If the first solution doesn't work, they put their heads together and try a new solution.
My Project
While kids are surrounded by money every day, many don't have a good sense of the value of each coin. I want to change that by introducing a game that will get them excited to practice their money skills. My students enjoy Zoob builders. They are pieces that connect together, and students can make their own structures. For this game, each Zoob piece will have a money value. Students will work with partners to roll the money dice and calculate the total. After 5 turns, they will head to the store to spend their money on Zoob pieces. They will have 5 minutes to build. They will set their creation aside, and play the game again. After building the second creation, students will compare differences and discuss how the amount of money they had to build varied, and what the differences were.
This game will allow my students a concrete way to connect to the ideas of financial literacy.
They will practice adding different denominations of coins and work with budgeting as they purchase their Zoob pieces. I imagine that this will become a class favorite and that I will hear cheers when I tell them it is time to practice our money skills!
