Our neighborhood school has been around for quite some time but has gone through many changes. We became a STEM school in the 2017-18 school year.
As an ELA teacher, my main focus is literacy across all subjects and I want to continually reinforce that mentality with flexible seating and blended learning environment.
I have a classroom library where the students can check out books. I'm constantly adding different types of technology into the classroom environment. I'm also moving towards more and more flexible seating - right now I'm in the process of phasing in these seating changes. Currently, I have two high-top tables and stools. I have two standing desks as well.
Our students are on free and reduced-price lunches, come from low-income families, foster families, or one-parent families. I do my best to meet all their needs within my personal means, but I can't always accommodate what my classroom needs. I want them to receive the most out of their education which is why I'm constantly working to improve my classroom environment with new furniture and activities.
As I continue to build a flexible classroom for my blended learning environment I have a need for additional items that have previously been purchased - like the tractor seats. With everything in the classroom currently, my environment has made a drastic shift in learning towards independent and individualized learning. I'm seeing students sit (or stand at the standing desks) where they are the most comfortable to learn. They are more focused and engaged with their work.
The chair socks will make the classroom less noisy when chairs are moving and the tractor seats will give the cafe height tables enough chairs for each group member to sit.
As part of my blended learning experience for my students, the new year will bring more individualized learning and I want to have maximum seating, without noise, for my students to take full advantage of the skills I'm showing them.
