I work in an amazing community. It is a very poor community. The families and children are very appreciative. The majority of children speak Spanish, learning English as a second language. We also have a large population of students with special needs. This year I have four students with autism that are mainstreamed in my class. I have a mixture of students that are proficient in English and unfortunately, some that are not. I have been teaching at this school for 18 years, in second grade, kindergarten and currently, third grade. Some of these children grow up with single working parents. Some children grow up with one or both parents incarcerated. It is very important for me to set up a classroom in which my students feel safe and love as well as a place that is academically rigorous. I am a strict but fun teacher. I feel it is important that I set up a very structured environment. These children deserve the best!
In my classroom, we have some chairs that have chair socks. I have had them for ten years. They work great when all students have them. Chairs can be very noisy and distracting to students as well as myself. These chair socks are lifesavers! But, I need them to be on all my students’ chairs. The ones I have are getting old and fall off. Noise is distracting to all, especially students with special needs. This year I have four students with autism in my classroom and I’m sure you can imagine their sensory concerns. This would help so much!
