Our preschool program is a state funded (free to families) Early Childhood Program that encompasses 3-5 year old students with special needs. My classroom has a vast variety of students with special needs. Currently, I have students with Autism, Developmental Delays, Intellectual Disabilities, Multiple Disabilities, and Speech/Language Impairments.
We as teachers constantly need to adapt our classroom resources to meet the varying needs of our students.
For example, I have children with a visual impairment (Cortical Visual Impairment) and need to be thoughtful on the resources I use with them because of their visual impairment. It can be challenging to find good quality resources for our diverse learners.
My Project
My project is focusing on obtaining quality toys for our youngest learners with disabilities. So many times, these students receive "hand me down" toys. Which works and is cost effective. However, it is a great day when students receive new toys!
We as teachers receive a set amount of money each year to spend on our classrooms.
Many times, that money goes towards snacks or simple classroom supplies. We receive our allotted money twice a year and have only 2 weeks to use that money. Many times, I need something when I do not have my allotted money and buy the needed items myself.
