Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers." This quote from Charles W. Eliot reminds me of the power of literature and my duty as a teacher to open and expand the literary world to my students.
I teach at a Title One school in a low socioeconomic area where the majority of the students are English Language Learners.
Third grade is that critical transitional grade from primary to the upper grades. In third grade, students learn what it takes to be a good reader. I want to build a read-aloud collection and classroom library that contains grade-level, quality, high-interest books that my third graders will want to read; such books will support them as they continue to grow as readers.
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from this assortment of grade-level, high-interest books throughout the school year. The read-aloud books will help my students develop their literary and critical thinking skills (predicting, analyzing, inferring) as well as their verbal skills (book discussions).
As independent readers, my students need a quality library to choose books from. Grade-level fiction series sets are extremely supportive of my third grade readers because they encourage and allow my students to become invested in characters and specific authors as they commit to and read through the books within a series.
Children are supposed to learn to read by 2nd or 3rd grade, and then they are supposed to "read to learn" for the rest of their lives.
With your help, my students will learn to read meaningfully, read to learn, but also read for the love of reading. Please help me build a high-quality collection of read-aloud books as well as help me add engaging grade-level series sets to our classroom library. Your donation will support my third graders on their road to becoming lifelong readers.
