My students need a collection of puzzles of various difficulties and puzzle mats.

My Students

The students in my class are sixth, seventh and eighth graders who attend a public middle school in a large, urban school district. The students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and the majority of the students are from low income households.

The students have all been identified as having special learning needs such as auditory processing deficits and attention deficits, which can make it difficult for them to find success in a traditional classroom setting.

In other ways, they are like all students. They are funny, insightful, smart, and interested. They always rise above expectations when given enough time and support.

My Project

One of the biggest difficulties I have found in teaching my classes is that students give up when they are frustrated. They don't have the skills to work through that frustration and see a lesson through.

I am hoping these puzzles will allow my students to work together and persevere at something, even when it is difficult.

Puzzles give instant feedback. You can see the progress you are making and see how far you have left to go. They also force students to make a plan, use logic and work together; all skills that will serve them well in high school, college and beyond.
