Putting the Pieces Together

Help me give my students jigsaw puzzles to work on with friends and future friends. The blank puzzles are so students can create puzzles for their peers.

My Students

Our middle students are using the library more than ever before. The latest books fly off our library shelves, circulation is more than twice what it was in 2017-18. In our school of just under 700 students over 40 percent of all students receive free or reduced lunch.

Help me, give them more than books from the library.

These students want to belong, want to connect, but many of them spend so much time in front of screen that they don't know how.

My Project

Right now, I have one puzzle in the library. I first put it out and students were happy to find it. In the moments before and after school and when work was done a few friends would begin putting pieces together and then others (who weren't year friends) would join in. They'd do some, and later in the day others would pick up were they left off. Building the puzzle, getting to know each other, working together, respecting what others are doing. Without even realizing it, they're improving spatial learning, building community and collaborating across classes, grade levels. If you help us purchase these student selected puzzles, this can continue.

They need to form friendships and one simple thing like a jigsaw puzzle can be enough to get them started; after all as Sally Kohn says "the opposite of hate is connection".
