Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Julian Barnes said, "Most of us remember adolescence as a kind of double negative: no longer allowed to be children, we are not yet capable of being adults." In my class, students are being prepared for adulthood, and they are fed emotionally and educationally, as well.

My students are bright, motivated young adults who attend a Title I school.

While they may lack some of the necessary materials or outside support to complete assignments, they are more than willing to collaborate with each other in the learning process, either by working in small groups, pooling supplies to give to others in need, or by providing moral and academic support.

My Project

My students need 4 laptop computers, headphones with built-in microphones and a charging station to create documents and work on projects in class. With new laptop computers, my students will be able to create documents (like resumes and personal statements), apply for colleges, fill out job applications, apply for much needed scholarships, and work on multimedia group projects. In my class, I incorporate technology in a variety of ways, but I also allow students to utilize the computers to gain new technological skills, such as keyboarding, coding, creating interactive presentations, music making and video production. Students appreciate having the luxury of using up-to-date technology since they may never have to option to do so elsewhere.

By having access to the technology afforded by this project, my students will be more willing to practice new skills and open themselves up to working with unfamiliar programs and classmates to achieve a common goal.

Currently, I have four desktop computers for my students to use, but with slow processing speeds and approximately 130 students in six class periods, computer time is precious. Most of my students don't have other places to access computers, so funding this project is vital for us.
