My Students

"Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it." --Greg Anderson. My students need a chance to celebrate the journey of learning and see the joy to be found in messy mistakes that are inevitable in the idea-forming, problem-solving process.

My ELLs, or English Language Learner students, are energetic, young pre-teens, who come from a range of immigrant experiences, and cultural backgrounds.

Their journey to master social and academic English is an uphill one. For many, the road is made more difficult by the social fears they face as adolescents and the gaps in knowledge that arise from the different approaches to schooling experienced in their home countries. Finding creative solutions to build a common foundation of base knowledge and skills is not an easy task, especially when limited to 20th century classroom tools in a 21st century world.

My Project

A document camera would be super helpful to help display students' written work, giving each of their efforts a chance in the instructional spotlight. Generally, students have to dictate their answers aloud while the teacher or a fellow student furiously scribbles on the board or types on the computer for projection overhead. A document camera would eliminate this obstacle of turning ideas on paper into digital versions, and it is essential to capture ideas that aren't only written words, such as pictures and diagrams. Just today in fact, a moment to praise a student's work was lost because there was no simple way to display his visual interpretation of a text for all to see because it was confined to his notebook.

So often my students are overwhelmed playing catch-up with their peers because of their limited English proficiency.

This project provides a simple, yet instrumental, piece of technology that can eliminate extra burdens in the exchange of ideas and important concepts. Your generous donations help ensure as many tools as possible are at my ELL students' disposal to reach their learning and development goals.
