Our school is small for a city school and goes unnoticed! Our beautiful building is 105 years old and is tucked inside an older neighborhood behind a fire station. We do not receive any Federal money; however, our free lunch program is over 65%! So our school has hard-working parents who have a lot of love to give their children but not extra money to give our school. We are an identified English Language Learners building with a full-time ELL teacher. Our school district is the largest in our state but so many schools around us have higher needs. This causes our school to go unnoticed.
Our school library needs new books!
I am our school's technology AND library teacher. I strongly feel that technology will never replace having a great book to hold in your hand! My observations have fully supported my opinion. Although I teach the kids how to read ebooks from many different sources, they rarely choose to read ebooks. They really do prefer to have a book in their hands.
Unfortunately, most of our books are TOO LOVED! Every day I tape books. Please help us purchase the latest titles for our students to enjoy!
My Project
Media balance is highly emphasized at our school. Although every student has a computer and access to multitudes of e-books and e-sources, we highlight book talks, author spotlights, and reading endurance. The number one factor that will affect any person's academic performance is reading. So we are trying to place reading books above all else at our school.
Kids still love books!
Students are begging for Mo Willems' Pigeon and Knuffle Bunny, Kathryn Lasky's wolf, bear, and horse series, Aaron Blabey's Pig the Pug. Unfortunately, the first thing to get cut in our schools is the library! This doesn't make sense, yet I haven't convinced anyone otherwise. We haven't been able to purchase some of the latest titles or replace long-time favorites. Help us keep the library a favorite place!
