My Students

Our Head Start friends will soon return in person after two months of remote learning recently. This year, our classroom has welcomed eighteen preschoolers ages 3-5. This is many of our students’ first experience in a school setting.

Our classroom is inclusive and full of kind and caring friends who want to help each other learn and grow.

The room supports children who have autism, children who are non-verbal, children who speak dual languages, children with speech delays, and children who struggle with self-regulation.

My Project

Pretend play is an important piece to children's early development. The idea of learning through play shows that children gain skills across several domains such as in language or social-emotional development. The Head Start curriculum emphasizes play during something called "work time", where children choose an interest area to play. Our dramatic play area, however, needs some updating.

The children would benefit from having new experiences in dramatic play that represent the real world around them.

Sometimes we even get to experience ourselves reflected in how children play. What better way to support children's growing interests than to offer play materials that are meaningful to them! These materials will help not only enhance children's knowledge but also provide new role-playing experiences, such as using a cash register or a play phone.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
