This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a rural, farming city in the Central Valley of California. Most of the students come from high poverty households. Our school serves sixth through eighth grades and has nearly two thousand students. Our school has been designated a School To Watch for the past two years among many other awards. The nearest university is fifteen miles away. Between the school and the university are acres of farmland. My job is to expose students to different possible career paths and introduce them to STEM options they might not have realized were available.

My Project

My students live in the Central Valley. We have some of the dirtiest air in the country as well as the highest childhood asthma rates. Our town does not have a particulate matter sensor for students or families to get data from. I want my students to track the daily PM and observe how it correlates to their health and how they are feeling. This sensor data is uploaded to a world map every 80 seconds. My students will learn about air pollution and ways to pollute less. This project incorporates all aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. I would appreciate any help in bringing this relevant lesson to life.
