I teach ELA to a remarkable group of students. My school is rural, and the town is a very tight-knit community. These students come mostly from hard-working farm and factory families. Most of my students live at or below the poverty line: my school qualifies for a program where 100% of the students get free breakfast and lunch. My classroom is also like a family. I end every class with "I love you. Have a great rest of your day!" Even though these are high school students, they still want school to be fun and exciting. I want to give them current materials and as many hands-on lessons that I can - but resources are often expensive!
I want students to know that my classroom is a safe place for learning, growing, and overcoming challenges.
Some students I teach are very reluctant readers and writers at the beginning of the school year, but I hope that they gain a better love for learning throughout the course of the year. Reading and writing are such a foundation for whatever career, vocational, or college path that they choose to pursue.
My Project
We are back in person this year and mask optional. I try to distance my students as much as possible, but my classroom is small and some of my classes have 30 students in them. I teach six classes a day and I try to keep my room sanitized. I've even taken them outside to learn whenever possible, but the weather is turning colder.
This project includes supplies that I need to try to keep my classroom a healthy place and productive in this new digital era.
The list includes an air purifier so that the air in my room is cleaned, along with Lysol Wipes, Kleenex, and Germ-ex. These items will be crucial as we head into cold and flu season on top of battling covid. I've also asked for an extension surge protector cord and charging station. My school does a lot more now with digital submissions. I give my students the option to type something or do something digitally whenever possible. However, my classroom is in the oldest part of our building and it wasn't designed with electronics in mind. I don't have a lot of plugins in my room and it would greatly help students to be able to charge their devices. I teach high school, so most students have devices and need them to be charged after school.
My students are amazing and I want to keep them as safe as possible and give them all the tools they need to be successful. Thank you!
