My Students

Our school is a second home to many, including me. Despite challenges, students in our community are willing to hold themselves and each other to the highest standards possible. Many of our students are ESL/ELL, and learning through socialization, games, and community is so important for them. This school is a Title I school, meaning students come from low income families that need extra assistance.

Despite their ages, school is a new experience for many of our students.

Having before and after school opportunities for them is an important way for students to acclimate themselves to the school and other students. Our students are eager to learn and play, but our lack of resources hinders them from having everything they need to learn and grow.

My Project

Puppets are an easy way to bring stories and music to life for younger students. My Young 5's class is made up of mostly students under 5 years old with no school experience. Listening to entire songs or stories with no visual can be essential in music, but difficult for young students to comprehend.

Puppets are an excellent way to help students visualize stories and stay engaged in storytelling and music making.

I have been given the luxury of borrowing several puppets to see their worth in my room, and happy to say my students' comprehension really rises with a visual.

I have chosen these particular puppets to go with particular stories and songs already embedded in my classroom, Young 5's through 1st grade. These include "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", a caterpillar to butterfly movement activity, Little Bunny Foo Foo, "Bear Snores On", and countless sound stories.
