Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Boy, do I think my students are great! They are funny, creative and professional. They come to school with uniforms and a desire to learn. The school is located in a community with many social and economic disadvantages. Our elementary school is considered "the jewel" of our neighborhood.
Each of my students is a precious jewel needing a polish to shine brightly.
Nearly all of my students are English Language Learners. They receive free or reduced-price lunches, because our school is a Title I school that teaches PreK - 5th grade. It is the central hub of the neighborhood, with a family center on our campus and a great field to play sports on.
Every day I am excited to enrich the lives of my students. I know my teaching is making a difference. For students who are already at a disadvantage in terms of language proficiency, I use a lot of strategies to highlight oral language retention.
My Project
My students love to role play. I have stuffed animal toys in my classroom that students use to read with and to. Often I see them using them in imaginative play, creating stories and voices. This form of child's play is important to their expression and helps them understand their emotions. Jim Benson, the creator of the Muppets, and Mr. Rogers, are two famous examples of individuals who understood the importance of imaginative role play in childhood.
My project wants to bring puppet theater into the classroom, using different hand puppets and environments in multiple ways: story telling, problem solving, entertainment, and real-life examples.
Students will get opportunities to write and perform their own stories. They will learn about voice projection and inflection. Students will design their own backdrops and props to include in their productions. This project will bring joy, expression, and creative talent into the classroom. They already have their fantastic imaginations.
