This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm sure everyone thinks this, but my students are absolutely incredible (possibly the best ever). They have the potential to be extremely thoughtful, kind, and engaged. Our school is located in a very poor neighborhood that has a lot of poverty, which often translates to our kids dealing with a lot at home.

Sometimes, tension builds up, and they need a place to safely let out their anger.

We're hoping to provide them with a punching bag, located in a separate room, to safely express extra energy and anger. This is part of an ongoing project to let students express and process their emotions before it turns into conflict with another student.

My Project

Once we receive the punching bag and gloves, we'll set them up in a separate room and let teachers know that the room is available. If students need a break, or are unable to control their emotions, they can utilize the punching bag and let it out, without escalating a situation in the classroom or in the halls. The room will be staffed at all times, and students will have the option to talk with an adult if they want to.

Our hope is that when faced with big emotions, students will be able to come to the room instead of remaining in class, not learning, and likely acting out.

Eventually, students will be able to recognize when they're not in control of their emotions, and will have a healthy outlet through which to express them.

Additionally, our school is very low on pencils. Having a healthy supply for each classroom would mean that teachers and students are able to focus on the task of learning, not the tools for learning.
