My students come from a rural blue collar area. We are a community that struggles with drop outs and teen pregnancies. Our students struggle with reading and we have a gap between the highest reading levels and males, especially African American males.
Why do African American males struggle more with reading? They told me there is nothing good to read. I have looked into authors who write short, interesting, low level books that would appeal to them.
I would like for them to be introduced to the novels of Charles R. Smith. He is an African American male who writes and illustrates books. They are on topics like sports and music. Both are topics that my students are interested in. My ultimate goal is to have him visit!
Your donation would encourage my students to read. Hopefully by getting them hooked on one book or one author the door will be opened for them to read even more. Open the door and their horizons could expand!
