Help me give my students a Publishers' Peak for our 5S Environmental Blog. Funding for the Publisher's Peak will include a standing two person table with two tall stools. This table will provide room for two Chromebooks.
My students arrive each day full of eager enthusiasm for new exploration in their world of learning. They come from a diverse variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some arrive as English Language Learners with a very limited understanding of the language. The Intermediate Learning Center integrates its students into my classroom for science, writing, homeroom, and specials. These students struggle with social-emotional issues while trying to learn the challenging curriculum. Their diagnoses include a wide range on the Autism Spectrum. Frequent movement and hands-on activities are important prerequisites to their learning.
My students have expressed interest and enthusiasm for engaging in written work that helps to make the world a better place.
Students now have access to their own Chromebook. This availability has greatly increased the students' interest in writing and editing their written work. This is especially true when the writing assignments serve a real-world purpose, rather than just for receiving a grade.
My Project
My students will be able to edit their writing submissions with their peers and teachers at our Publishing Peak standing table with comfortable tall stools.
These writing pieces will be aimed at our newly forming Environmental Blog to encourage recycling at our school and community.
Students will realize first hand that they can make the world a better place even as fifth-graders.
An additional benefit will be the feel of a real-world editors' office. Using Google Classroom editing tools on their Chromebooks, students will learn how to safely and effectively communicate online with our classroom blog.
Submissions to the environmental blog will be anonymous and not include students' names, personal information or pictures. This is to help students realize how to stay safe online.
By engaging in real-world, purposeful writing, students will learn to express themselves and communicate with others effectively employing enhanced written language skills. This is especially important in our current age of technology where the written word is a powerful online form of communication. They also will learn the importance of being positive change agents in a world that needs their youthful initiative, ideas, and innovations.
