Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a 6-8 charter school where 1/3 of our students are migrants and live in poverty. I run a student leadership program with the 7th graders and the girls suggested putting together some hygiene products for the girl's bathrooms. This is the age group where students begin puberty and start menstruating and a lot of the kids do not have the financial means to purchase enough sanitary napkins, toothbrushes, or even deodorants! We would use the money for those products mentioned.

My Project

Need sanitary pads for our girls at school. Many of them live below the poverty level and we have noticed an increase in absenteeism tied to menstrual issues.

The receptacles and pads will be placed in the girls

bathrooms.

Females, try to remember the moment you became a woman.

More than likely you were at school and were unsure of what was happening until class ended and someone pointed out the stain on the back of your pants or skirt. Most young girls are too embarrassed to go to the nurse if there is one, or to a teacher to ask for help. Having access to a sanitary napkin will bring our girls peace of mind, allow them to stay in school and focus on their education.
