My Students

Every day students come to school without the necessary skills and tools to be successful. It is becoming more and more the job of teachers to supply the basic materials that parents used to provide such as: pens, pencils, paper, folders, notebooks, and calculators.

Our high school is a part of the smaller learning communities philosophy.

I am the learning specialist for Team 5. This co-teaching opportunity allows us to mainstream more students with special education services, as well as provide extra support to those students who are slow learners or unmotivated. The majority of the students I am concerned with are 9th graders who are in the Applied Algebra classes as their math skills are not on track. They still struggle with multiplication tables and working with negative numbers, yet the state requirement is that they successfully complete algebra and be prepared to move on to geometry, followed by a third year of math. Out of our second period class, only three students arrive with their own calculators. Though parents were given a supply list for the year, few come with calculators. Many of the students are low income. We are a public high school in a district where over 40% of students are on free or reduced lunches

My Project

Being successful in life depends on having the right tools to do the job. We wouldn't expect a carpenter to build a house without a hammer, yet students are asked to perform math tasks that are not only above their skill level but without the most important tool - the calculator. Last year we got a donation of simple, promotional calculators from a local business, but they don't perform some of the tasks students aren't proficient with and therefore, not efficient. Students who arrive to a math class without the necessary skills and tools often already feel beaten down and show little motivation. By providing the students with the calculators and the extra support I can give them in the classroom, we hope to increase their skill levels while increasing their comfort and love for math. Math is a life skill that must be conquered.

With the economy as it is, more and more students are coming to schools without necessary materials, yet the teacher supply budgets are being cut.

You are the people who can help the schools bridge that gap between the students who are prepared to be successful and those who continue to follow a path of failure not because they don't care but because they don't have the tools. Thank you for your consideration.
