This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

With tough home lives and difficult situations to face in their neighborhoods, my students come to school every day to find a safe place in school and their gymnasium. Being in gym class and their regular classrooms offers them relief from their difficult lives. During class, our students often have conversations about intramural practice and the drills they will be running that afternoon, or the next opponent they have in a scheduled game. My emotionally disturbed students do not benefit from a support staff that sits back and does nothing. It is a goal of ours to provide our students the ability to look like a unified team. What may just be a team to us is much more to our students. It is not just basketball to them, and when they try to play, they do not have the appropriate basketball shorts to wear on the basketball court. With these basketball shorts, my students will feel united as a team while participating in basketball practice. These shorts will make my students feel as if they are an active member on a team for the first time ever. Together we can give our students basketball shorts to build team unity!

My Project

When the balls get rolled out to start our basketball intramural practice, for some of our students it is the best part of their day. While they come to school to build their skills to become productive citizens, they stay after school to play basketball in a safe environment. We are striving to create a stress-free environment and decrease our students from giving up due to a lack of financial freedom or hand-me down clothes. As the support staff, we want to show our students that they can overcome their home situations and become productive student-athletes. With these basketball shorts, we can provide our students with athletic apparel that they have only desired. For most of our athletes, this will be the first time they have ever opened a new pair of team shorts that they can call their own. Together we can show our intramural basketball young men and women that we don't want them to come up short(s)!
