How do I describe my students? They are a group that has incredible potential, but not a lot of experiences. Our school provides education to underprivileged kids, they grow up in the same neighborhood and even on the same block that their parents grew up. My students do not have many experiences outside of their neighborhood. They live on one city block and many have not been privileged enough to see many things most people take for granted including the zoo, the beach and the library, all of which are close to them. My students are chosen based on need and for many this is the first time they have been in a school setting. They thrive! They learn how to interact, speak with confidence all while being surrounded in a safe please. I do my best to show them what unconditional faith and love looks like, investing in their learning and adding meaningful experiences that will grow their vocabulary as well as teach them there is more for them, our school motto is “College begins in PreK” and it is my job, my passion and my calling to teach them about that they are able.
These items would be use to help grow my students learning! We would use the cars and train signs to help students learn about transportation and recognizing sounds, colors and "reading" signs. These are vital for students when they are learning about their surrounding. The ability to recognize street sign helps to keep them safe in their high traffic neighbor. They will learn how to use appropriate language and how to respect and adhere to traffic language. They will also be able to use their imagination, correct conversational skills and how to resolve peer quarrels. The train table would help provide a concrete way for them to use the items in a way that would be realistic and therefore most beneficial.
