Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an instructional coach at DMS and are located in the 4th poorest zip code in our city. DMS houses a magnet STEM Academy. We have hardworking students and staff who are doing the best they can during this hybrid learning experience that many schools are dealing with right now. Because of the low socioeconomic area that we serve our students are dealing with additional stresses such as no or unstable wifi, multiple siblings sharing technology and space at home, parents who work more than one job, homelessness, and lack of money due to Covid19 layoffs impacting their parents, and isolation from their peers and teachers. Despite all these struggles they work hard and are doing the best they can to maintain some kind of normalcy in their lives. Our students deserve the best education and care and we work so hard to ensure that they are getting a solid education as well as meeting their social-emotional needs during this time in our country.
My Project
We want to use the iPads for our STEM at-home students who currently have to share devices with siblings or lack any state of the art (current) technology to participate in their STEM elective classes at home. The iPad will allow them to participate in computer/technology projects with these devices. We also plan to use the earbuds as an award/incentive to our techy students who have good attendance and earn good grades. We are so aware that many of our students don't have to login day after day to learn from home - but they do - and we want to reward their diligence and love for learning!
