Providing Comfort for Students if They're Under the Weather
Help me give my students light covers and decorations to provide comfort when and if they have to go to our school's "isolation room" if they exhibit signs of illness.

My Students
This year I will be teaching fourth grade. Our district is very diverse and we have approximately 60% English language learners.
Our students come from a wide range of different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Over 60% of our students receive a free lunch. Our school also has a wide range of academic levels. Our school supports this wide range with programs like our Response to Intervention Reading Program (RTI.) Teachers regularly meet to look at student learning, assessments and examine our practice.
I am inspired every day by the young people we serve. Many of our students face adversity in their lives yet come to school eager to learn each day. Our families come from diverse backgrounds and come together to support and celebrate these kids. Also, our staff works tirelessly and passionately to bring quality instruction to our students. I'm so very proud to be a part of this community.
This project, however, is something I want to do to support all of the students at our elementary school.
My Project
This next school year will be challenging on so many levels because of the Coronavirus. We are planning on returning to school under medium-level restrictions with classes broken into half sizes to be able to maintain social distancing. If a student exhibits any signs of illness at school they will be taken to an "isolation room" to be evaluated and even await parent pick up. This procedure is meant to keep our students safe, but for the student being asked to go to that space, it could feel very unsettling. Before getting a virus or flu wasn't a scary idea. However, now children might automatically fear the worst.
Help us make this illness isolation room into a comforting place that won't scare our children.
The materials for this project will turn this space into an "Under the Weather" themed area. Soft lighting, cheerful bulletin boards, snowflake lights, and hanging clouds will make the space feel special and magical for our young students. I and a team of teachers plan to decorate the space with these items as well as hand made items as well. We will add some instructional items as well. For instance, a water cycle wall, weather vocabulary, alphabet visuals, etc. We always take the opportunity to apply some learning when we can.
We expect that children have been under stress and trauma due to this pandemic. Their safety and social-emotional well being is at the top of our priorities when they return to school in the fall.
