My Project

My students are special because they come from foreign countries and do not yet speak English. Most of my students have not had schooling in their previous country and therefore their first language skills are poor. As the newcomer teacher, I accelerate their English language skills so that they can assimilate into their grade level classrooms.

Making my students feel welcome is the first step towards second language acquisition.

One of the ways that I accomplish this is by providing all the materials students need, including headsets, notebooks and pencils. When students have their material needs, they do not have to make up stories like "I forgot," when in fact they know their family does not have the money to provide these things. This allows students to have more bandwidth to focus on their learning.

My students need headsets with microphones because recording their own reading and listening back to their own voice is a strategy that helps to learn a foreign language. Notebooks and pencils are some of the most basic needs that I can provide for my students as well.
