I teach the "Newcomers," ELL class. Most of my students come from Micronesia where schools do not teach in the western tradition. Some of my students, despite being aged from 2nd to 5th grade, have never been enrolled in a school before. Basically, everything introduced to my students is new to them. I am their introduction to so many things and I try to make their new experiences positive ones! This is especially important since many students move due to a traumatic experience, such as a sickness or death in the family. Many students find every aspect of school a challenge to say the least. My students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Often parents cannot help their children with school work because of language barriers. A majority of our students come from poverty level homes. A large proportion (approximately 74%) of the students are eligible for the State Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
