I serve 3-5 year olds with a wide variety of speech and language delays who qualify for special education services through Lawrence Public Schools. These children learn best through play and need to have a wide variety of toys available to them in order to provide them hands on opportunities to learn. They need to be able to manipulate things to learn, which allows them to see, hear, touch and move while learning. I want to be able to provide my students with appropriate materials to help them achieve their communication goals.
My Project
I currently evaluate and serve preschool age children with a wide variety of communication delays, ranging from very significant to mild. I travel all over the community to provide these services and have to share materials with other staff members resulting in not always having what I need accessible to me to serve my students. With the materials I have requested I will have what I need and be able to tailor therapy sessions to meet individual needs of my students to help them meet their communication goals. I will be able to take these materials with me to different sites around the community. These kids learn best through play. Some of the skills we target include following directions, turn taking, using materials appropriately, requesting, asking for help and asking and answering questions.
