Prototypes and Plaster: Fostering a Maker Mindset Through Art

Help me give my students the opportunity to create 3D sculpture prototypes out of plaster. I'm planning a design thinking challenge for students to solve an issue in society.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sometimes, you walk into my classroom and they are silently writing or drawing, other times it's so loud you can't hear the person next to you... it's organized chaos! And we LOVE every minute of it. They're learning and thinking outside the box every day. I love it when they tell me "Miss, your class is hard. I thought it was just about painting or drawing something nice."

Our classrooms are filled with technology-obsessed curious minds so integrating hands-on tech and design into my art class will hopefully inspire students to create innovative projects and explore alternate ways of thinking about careers in the ARTS!

My Project

Paper is easily accessible in our art classroom but what really intrigues my adolescents is when they're allowed to get messy and create with their hands. By providing them with tools to sculpt, I want to foster a creative space where they can make things without worrying about their "I can't draw" mindset. By being allowed to make and play in the art room, my high school students can tap into their "inner maker" and figure out how to solve real world problems.

Integrating design thinking into my art curriculum allows students to acknowledge their unsuccessful attempts as learning opportunities for new ideas and approaches.

Plaster is a fun way of solidifying their visual sketches and seeing them come to life! So, I'm requesting Blick Plaster Cloth.
